Beyond the Gates festival takes place in Bergen, NO from August 2nd - Aug 5th. This years marks the 10th anniversary since it formed back in 2013, after the predecessor, "Hole in the Sky" came to an end in 2012. This extreme metal festival isn't just any plain old festival, it comes with experiences, tattoo convention, and more, plus a bonus of getting to see and explore the quaint town, of Bergen and see the mighty fjords Norway has to offer.

BEYOND THE GATES EXPERIENCES
For the second time we invite all our faithfuls to take part in all the festival-side events dubbed Beyond the Gates Experience. Since the inception of the Beyond the Gates festival, fans have been coming to Bergen to see performances of their favorite Norwegian artists in their home environment. As most of our visitors know, nature and local culture has always been a poignant source of inspiration for the bands emerging from the Bergen scene.
Yet again Beyond the Gates will give all the traveling fans the opportunity to get an unique insight into all aspects of the Norwegian Metal scene and the local culture in general. In that regard we’re putting together a series of events before and during the festival so that all of you can discover what inspired – and still does - the Norwegian metal scene.Join us for guided tours in old historical parts of Bergen town or visit the art gallery to a certain well known singer at Bryggen in Bergen that will hold an exhibition this year you won't miss! This year we will also introduce a guided tour to the famous Fantoft Stave Church.
Moving on… There will be listening parties, panels, in-depth live interviews and lots of events and activities that hopefully will give you a Beyond the Gates Experience that will last for a lifetime. Keep your eyes on these pages and we will post more news and tours as we go.
GUIDED TOURS:
Black Metal Landmarks with Tore Bratseth
Metal legend and storyteller bar none, Tore Bratseth (Old Funeral, The Batallion, Bömbers) will take you on a trip to the outskirts of Bergen to show our visitors a series of key locations in the Norwegian black metal lore. The trip includes stops at the Lysekloster ruins, where many legendary photo and video shoots has taken place. You will also be able to see the bunker where Euronymous was photographed for the “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas” promo cycle. Another stop on the trek is the location of the original Os Rock club where Mayhem rehearsed before the recording “DMDS” in Grieghallen, and also regular rehearsal place for Old Funeral and Amputation.
This trip will go by bus from outside of Grieghallen (Nygårdsgaten).

Beyond the Black Metal Classics - a guided tour of Grieghallen with Pytten
If you want to get an in-depth look on how some of the most renowned black metal classics from the 90s came together, look no further. Legendary producer Pytten has offered to take the Beyond the Gates audience on a guided tour of Grieghallen where seminal albums such as Enslaved’s «Vikingligr Veldi», “Frost” and “Eld”, the first two Emperor albums, «In the Nightside Eclipse» and «Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk», Gorgoroth’s “Pentagram” and “Antichrist”, and Mayhem’s «De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas» were recorded.
Add to those a wide array of other classics such as Immortal’s «Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism», «Battles in the North ». All of them instrumental in shaping what became the sound of the inimitable Norwegian Black Metal scene in the 90’s.

A Guided tour to Fantoft Stave Church
Join us for a journey to the historical Fantoft Stave Church. The church is located in the Fana borough some 15 minutes outside the city center. It was built around 1150 on a different location and later moved to Fana in 1883. The stave church was destroyed by arson on the 6th of June 1992 and has since been rebuilt.
Black Metal historian Finn Håkon Rødland and Are Mundal will tell you the stories.
This trip will go by bus from outside of Grieghallen (Nygårdsgaten).

EVENTS:
Beyond the Ink tattoo convention
In collaboration with our friends and tattoo artists from Bergen; Carmen PG (Blekknroll) and Jannicke Wiese-Hansen, Beyond the Gates will yet again host an exclusive tattoo gathering with some of the best and most respected tattoo artist (and metal heads!) from all over the world at USF Verftet and Grieghallen. This gives our visitors the chance to enjoy a full experience of metal and ink together! The convention will take place 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th of August at the exhibition room at USF Verftet and the Grieghallen lobby.

SUSTAINABILITY:
Beyond The Gates is a green festival, and has received the Grønn Festival certification since 2021.We are always working to reduce our carbon footprint and contribute to a more sustainable festival industry. Some of our measures include:
Green market: at our festival market, you can mend and redesign clothing, and purchase vintage merchandise.
Power, infrastructure, waste, and recycling: our 2 main venues, USF Verftet and Grieghallen, are both certified Eco-Lighthouse. The venues have efficient power-saving measures, and sorts waste into at least 4 different fractions for recycling.
Acquisitions, merchandise, and printed materials: we do thorough research into sustainability before making any acquisitions, and also consider renting or participating in the local sharing economy. Our merchandise is made of sustainable products, and we base the inventory on last year’s sales to avoid any remaining stock.
Plant-based options and locally sourced food: we always offer plant-based options, and use locally sourced ingredients and providers.
Transportation: at least 80% of our internal, local transportation at the festival is either being done by bike or electric cars and vans. We donate compensation for any transportation or travel by plane to an environmental organization.
As an audience member, we hope that you too will help to make our festival a little greener. Please make conscious choices when you make purchases, travel, eat, and experience what both Beyond The Gates and Bergen have to offer.
