As the yearly Deftones festival makes its return after a two year hiatus post pandemic. They brought a lineup full of heavy hitters that is diverse and will please any music fan. As you walk into Petco Park, you immediately feel as if you were transported into a Day of the Dead celebration that had papel picado, marigolds and cavaleras decorated throughout the festival grounds. From the face painting, low riders and the altar where you can place photos of your loved one’s who passed so that they can be honored by all there was always something to do besides just the music. On the cavalera stage Cold Gawd, a not so typical shoegaze band that just released a record that has people talking about the changes they are going to make to shoegaze. The you have Provoker who are a post punk band from the Bay Area that have a familiar but very different sound at the same time. Lastly was the rapper extraordinaire Freddie Gibbs performing to a sold out crowd.  Either you knew Freddie coming into the show and if you didn’t, Freddie Gibbs is now a name that you will not forget because of the raw, unfiltered performance that he delivered without any issues.

As we move over to the All Souls stage the punk band that has been making waves as of late Destroy Boys takes the stage and bring a high energy, unforgettable performance that will have you keeping an eye on this band in the future since this will not be the last time you hear of them. Phantogram, the electronic rock-pop band makes their return after a taking a break for a couple of years now to an excited crowd. As the sun sets, Phantogram deliver their fan favorite songs sounding better than ever.  From the stage you cannot see anything but a sea of people that took over Gallagher Square  and packed it in for the almighty Turnstile. The band that is putting hardcore on the map  and taking it to new levels is because of the sound that they have created after their last album “ Glow on “ that still retains the heaviness but incorporates Dream punk and other elements that help elevate them to new heights. There is so much happening on stage, you have no idea where to focus your attention  but just to consume the music that is Turnstile and absorb the energy that is brought from the crowd. From crowd surfing to moshing, it was complete chaos ( in a good way )  for the next hour. Turnstile’s energy is contagious and their is a reason why this band has become to be loved by all and they are just getting started.

Lastly is a band that needs no introduction who have been making a name for themselves for the past 3 decades. People went absolutely crazy for the Deftones and could not contain their excitement. Chino came out “ My Own Summer ( Shove It ) “ waking everyone up from the long day and reminded them of the reason why everyone made it out to San Diego. Chino’s impeccable vocals backed the band made a great performance that was taken to the next level by the light production. Various lighted diamonds that had changing lights that hung over the band creating a visual feast that nothing short of pleasing to the eyes. Once again the Deftones curated an enjoyable experience that was filled with tons of activities, great music, delicious food and drinks. Keep your eyes out next year for the lineup announcement because without a doubt it will be top notch.
