JANUARY 12th 2017

Welcome to Metaltitans, Guardians of Metal Entertainment Worldwide, we are here with Scott Leach from the Hard rock, Melodic Metal band Crystal Ball. Thank you for taking the time to do this interview with us.

Interview By: Metal Mom

1. You have a new album "Déjà-Voodoo", interesting name, how did you come up with it?

I picked that expression up somewhere on TV and I immediately knew that I wanted to do something with it.

So it became a song title first. Our producer, Stefan Kaufmann (ex-Accept, ex-UDO) insisted that this should be the album title and he was right.

2. You also had an album released in 2015 "Liferider", when you recorded and finished that one, did you already have songs written for the new album at the time?

We had some songs left, but we didn’t use any of them for the new Déjà-Voodoo album. All the songs on DV are completely new.

3. What can people expect from Déjà-Voodoo compared to Liferider?

I think it’s the logical successor of the previous album. It’s picks up where LifeRider ended and takes it a little further without leaving the Crystal Ball style behind. The sound is more intense, the guitars are more “in your face” and the grooves are straighter. I feel that we evolved as songwriters and always focus on song rather than on technical stuff.

4. There are 11 songs on the new album, do you personally have a favourite?

That changes every time I listen to it, haha. And when it comes to playing the song it’s different again.

But I really like Déjà-Voodoo and Directors Cut.

5. Where was the album recorded and mixed?

It was recorded it in Solingen (Germany) with our producer Stefan Kaufmann (ex-Accept, ex-U.D.O.).

6. Was there any rough spots when putting the album together, or did it go smoothly?

It went down very smoothly.

7. Love the voodoo image for the artwork, who created it?

Thomas Ewerhard. It’s the 5th time we worked with him.

8. Did you give the artist some ideas, or did he create it on his own?

Oh yes, the concept for the artwork came from us. I would give him the idea and he provides us with a visual idea for it.

Then it goes back and forth several times, until we’re satisfied. Sometimes new ideas pop up in the process.

9. You have a tour starting on November 3rd, will you be playing more songs from the new album, or an even mix?

We will play about 50% new stuff and 50% a mix of the previous records (mostly the last two and some classics).

10. After that tour in Europe, do you have others planned, like maybe North America?

We hope to do another tour in spring and maybe some more exotic stuff. Of course we would love to come to North America, but it’s not very likely at the moment. A festival or a cruise would be a great start, though.

11. When you are on tour, I imagine your fans give you gifts, what is the most memorable one?

Yes, we got great stuff over the years, our own wine, candles, mirrors, pictures, golden-records, etc.

One of the greatest gifts is a handmade metal-pendant that looks exactly like our LifeRider Album cover. You can see it in our video clip for Déjà-Voodoo.

12. Is there a band, that is your ultimate favourite but you haven't seen them play?

Well, I haven’t seen Queen in original Line-up. I really regret that.

13. When you go out on tour, do you get to decide who the other bands are that go with you?

That really depends, most of time we don’t.  If it’s a Headliner tour, we will certainly have the right to decide.

But for festivals or single shows we’re usually not involved and it’s the promoter call.

14. For you, what is the best part about being in Crystal Ball?

Making music with my friends and playing for other people is a great feeling you just can’t buy.

15. Have you ever, for one second regretted being in the band?

No. Otherwise I wouldn’t be doing it.

16. If you for whatever reason had to change careers, what do you think you would be doing instead?

I would love to do something with movies or video clips.

17. Is there anything you would like to add to this interview that I might have missed asking?

I’d like to thank all our fans and everybody’s who following us social media. Please leave a comment and a like.
