Welcome to Metaltitans, Guardians of Metal entertainment worldwide. We at Metaltitans got the chance to talk with Steve from Fatal Instinct who rose out of the depths of Langley, British Columbia, the infamous “Bible Belt“ . Thank you for taking the time to do this interview with us Steve.

Tell us how Fatal Instinct came to be a band ?

Steve: James Buhs (singer) started the project, when between looking for a guitar player; he saw a “unique” Craigslist ad.  This ad was placed by my wife Lisa who was tired of me wasting time in “Boring” projects. Pretty much, NO BS!!  Let’s Fkn’ play!

What was it that made you choose Fatal Instinct as the name, did it have anything to do with Fatal Instinct the 1993 comedy film directed by Carl Reiner ?

Steve: NO!  Not at all.  Fatal Instinct was created by a collection of thoughts, churned up because of a “Lack” of decent Metal Music.  James had a vision: to create a neoteric style of music in Vancouver.

Now you have mentioned that you are frustrated with today’s Metal offerings, so you wanted to create a true Neoteric Sound, can you explain what exactly that is ?

Steve: I always believed in stepping out of the box.  Not to be cornered or type casted by a label. Being neoteric means a NEW outlook on how we as a band write.  We all listen to many genres of music and that helps us with opening a new approach on how we write our music and display it LIVE.  Each of us are so different, but all want the same goal.

Tell us who is in the band, and how they each came to be in Fatal Instinct ?

Steve: James Buhs (singer) and Scott Aquino (drummer) are long time friends and were involved in another band called Devils Tower.  Chris Campbell (bassist) is also a long time friend of Scotts.  Both played together in other projects.  Me….well I guess I can say I’m the outcast or newbie…LOL.  I have always been the front man of my bands or the lead/rhythm guitar.  After, the ad on Craigslist….I tried out for the band and well the rest is as they say “History”  We are all brother’s (from other mothers ha ha).

As you were growing up, did you have anyone in particular that had an influence on your music ?

Steve: Yes!  Anywhere from Andre Segovia to James Hetfield / Zakk Wylde.  I grew up in a home with many genres of music from classical to opera.  I guess I picked up a few things along the way.

Is this something you have always wanted to do, since a child, to be in a band ?

Steve: YUP!  Ya know, it was a way out of a single child home.  It gave me a purpose to want to see the world through music.  I have always played an instrument, thanks to friends growing up.  It was a niche, I wanted to perfect!

Who did you listen to when you were young, what bands, or musicians ?

Steve: I listened to a lot of opera, since it was always playing at home.  At the age of 10 my Grandmother got me a Twisted Sister and Michael Jackson “Thriller” cassette!!!!  It was done….I was hooked!!  I knew I wanted to play!  Other mentions, Metallica, Anthrax, Gypsy Kings, Joe Satriani, Public Enemy for sure!!!  The whole rap/metal scene was just wicked!!!

What would you be doing right now if you could not be in a band ?

Steve: Honestly, Driving my wife nuts!!!  So…..on that note, to keep busy I have made sure to secure my life with a good job as a Red Seal Machinist, Red Seal Millwright.  I have just finished building my home studio “Machine Shop Studio” to help other bands, in need of recording who are short on funds.

So when you all practise together do you have a specific place, someone’s home or a studio ?

Steve: We have our own lock out “Ground Zero” as I call it.  It’s located in Langley.  We practice twice a week as a whole, sometimes more…depending on our shows.

Your choices for lyrics are politics, war, relationships, what made you chose these kinds of lyrics, was it close to everyone’s heart, which makes for better songs ? Since you are from the “Bible Belt” you don’t sing about religion ?

Steve:  James is the lyricist, writing from personal experiences and life!  Many things like, his daughter being bullied at school made him write “Firing Squad” A song about how a Father feels about people hurting his kin.   But, we all have say in how we feel a song should be felt to others…so many emotions come out of these songs.
As for the Bible Belt, well we live in the area where religion is suppose to change lives, but we as individuals have our different beliefs.  Making us all different!

Gene Hoglan has worked with such acts as: Devin  Townsend, Tenet, Dethklok, Dark Angel, Death, Testament, Strapping Young Lad, Fear Factory, Meldrum, Opeth, Unearth, Zimmers Hole, Pitch Black Forecast, Forbidden, Phantasm, Mechanism, Fall of Olympus, Old Man’s Child, and Viking.

Who does the writing of the lyrics for the band ?

Steve: James does the majority.  We all throw in bits and pieces to make it complete.

Do each of you bring your own sound to the table then put it all together, or does one person do it all, and each of you learns your part ?

Steve: I write all the guitar parts (instrumentally) I come up with the chorus and verse and lead etc…then jam it out at rehearsal and see how it meshes.  We then make it ours!

Has anyone in the band taken lessons for what they do, guitar, drums, vocals…or has everyone more or less learned on their own ?

Steve:  I can’t speak for the rest of the band, but I learned by ear and watching my Grandmother play Flamenco guitar.

With your facebook page you have acquired a lot of fans, over 5000 , that’s impressive, is it hard to get your name out there to people ?

Steve: YES!!!  It takes hours off a day, just sitting in front of a computer checking profiles to see if they would even like your music.  Like most, I don’t want to waste people’s time by spamming their pages.  WE want Metal fans.  WE, the band go to concerts and do it old school…Flyering parking lots, talking to people, handing out FREE cd’s and hoping that they will come to our next gig.  We have come a long way from Myspace!!!

How are the turn outs when you play the local venues ?

Steve: We are doing well.  We have only have a handful of shows, since we have been recording our cd, but the turn outs have been awesome and the word FATAL INSTICT is spreading.  Check out Gene Hoglan (he’s wearing our merch) FKN COOL!!!

Where do you see yourself in say 5 years ?

Steve:  Well if all goes to plan, we hope to be touring the US and Europe!

Do you think you need a label to help you along, or will you manage and do the work yourselves ?

Steve: A label will always be keen to have, but we can do most of the leg work ourselves. But, if someone wants to jump in and help us out…we’re game to listen!

Is there anything you would like to add, that I might have missed asking , that you want the fans to know ?

Steve: We are all down to earth; we’ll drink a beer with you, stay at a gig till all cd’s and merch is signed or picture is taken.  Truly a great bunch of guys that just wanna play our music….play it LOUD!!!  We love all the pics of people wearing out Fatal gear…we have awesome merch….keep posting pics on our page and spread the word…FATAL INSTINCT is coming!!!!

Thank you so much for taking the time to do this interview with us here at Metaltitans, and we wish you FATAL INSTINCT much success.
