JULY 7th 2017

Welcome to Metaltitans, Guardians of Music Entertainment Worldwide. We are here with Jonathan Brutschin of the Thrash Metal band Freakings.

For those of us who don't know the name, explain how you came to be called "Freakings"?

It’s a play of words. We are three guys, sometimes act like kings and freak out a lot.

Why did you pick Thrash to play over all other genres?

It’s in our blood. I like to be able to vent my aggressions trough the fast songs. I would say it helps me to balance my life. That’s not really something I could say for the other metal genres.

Did you have someone who was an inspiration that led you to thrash?

No, not really. In the early days, it was Metallica, Slayer and Vengeance Rising. Metallica kind of lost magic for me, today I prefer Violator and Slayer again. In my teenage years, I was more of a Grunge and Punk person, if I’m being honest. The first song I figured out how to play on my guitar, was “Come as you are” by Nirvana.

Tell us how each of your band members came to be in the band....

I believe the first time we met in summer camp. That’s also where our teeny band originated from. Nothing big, I think we played around 5 concerts total. After some time off for family business we met again and wanted to play a small concert for one of our friend’s wedding. Relive the old times. That kind of relit our fire and because we all like Thrash so much, that was also the time we decided to be a trash centered band.

Tell us a little about the style of thrash that you play.

‘Old School Thrash to the bone’. I would summarize it as: fast, aggressive and uncompromising. Topped off by a clear shouting voice, wicked bridges, memorable eight-note guitar melodies. Our goal is to let our fans no choice to headbang!

You now have a third album "Toxic End", how did you come up with the name for the album?

We tried to find a common theme through all of our eleven songs that also fits the thrash genre. Toxic end quickly became our favorite because it encompasses themes like atomic power, poison and doom.

How is this album different from your last?

It’s even faster and more uncompromising. We try to stay above 240bpm in almost all of our songs. One could say we had a lot of aggressions to let out during the writing period

How long did it take you from start to, completing the album?

From the first song to the release of the album, about 14 months.

Do you personally have a favourite song?

Hell yeah! Wave of Pain!

If you do, why that one?

Difficult to say… I still get goosebumps while we play that song. Possibly just the combination of the sounds and the early guitar solo.

Who designed the album cover, and did you give the artist some ideas, or did he come up with it on his own?

Tomin Kokott! We gave him the lyrics of toxic end and he went from there. We loved his first draft! The rest of the artwork was done by our drummer Simon, like on our last two albums.

As you grew up, did you know this is what you wanted to do?

As soon as my sister listened to “Blackend” by Metallica on a daily basis and by father gave me his old guitar, I was hooked. I think at this point I was 12 years old.

You don't have a label if I have done my homework, how do you manage to put these albums out on your own?

That’s right, we don’t. We hired Markus Eck (Metalmessage) as our promoter. Thanks to his work could heighten the profile of our band and the new album. Sales and bookings were still done by us, which is a hell of a lot of work.

Tell us a little about the band.

Well, in addition to being a band we also consider ourselves to be a family. We have known each other for more than 20 years. If one of us is miserable, the band I miserable and vice versa. The band exists since 2008 and we already published 3 albums and play a lot concerts.

And can you please tell us a little about your hometown, I haven’t heard the name before?

Basel is a small town in Switzerland. The Swiss metal scene is quite small and people known each other. It’s possible that you have heard of the club z-7. Every swiss metalhead has been there at least once. Kreator, Slayer, Megadeath, Dark Angel …. played there for instance.

So when you are not working on band things, what can we find you doing?

When I’m at home I enjoy my wife and kids. During the day, I teach and sometimes work on Apps and other software. Sometimes I even mange to sneak in a concert.

What kind of music do you enjoy?

 Just Thrash!

Do you have a band that you really enjoy that would surprise us?

Hmm... I enjoy Queen, Aerosmith and Alter Bridge. I always come back to them.
