Welcome to Metaltitans, we are here with Thomas, the drummer from "FROM ASHES REBORN", a Metal/Melodic/Death Metal band out of Germany. A relatively new band to the scene, forming in 2017, check out our interview below for more on this new metal project.

Interview By: Metal Mom

You just put this band together in 2017, what made you decide to do this ?

Actually our guitarist Dirk and I met in kindergarden – we have known each other for 30 years and we have been performing music together since we are 14. Together we founded a band called BADOC which Sebastian, our 2nd guitarist and Tobias, Bassists, joined. After BADOC split up in 2016, we decided to form a new band with a new singer. It took until 2017 that we found a new voice with Ronny.

Were you in another band before starting this one?

Yes, so most of us played in BADOC already together. But there have been and still are other projects, for example ICHOR or DER ROTE MILAN, where our bassist is heavily involved. But also Sebastian plays the drums in HIATUS.

Tell us how you came about the name?

That was a very long process. The thing about band names is, that musicians tend to overestimate the impact of a band name and spend hours and hours to find a good one. There are many highly successful bands with cruel band names, so it seems there is no direct correlation between the two. The importance of a band name I think is a very individual aspect for each band or musician, as it very much depends on the lyrical and musical concept. For us, the process was quite long and intensive, as we had a sharp vision what the band name should express. For example, it was and is important to indicate heaviness – meaning we wanted the name to sound Metal, however it should not lead the listener directly into a certain Sub-Genre of music. If you find one, and you go through the archives or the internet, you will learn that most great band names are already occupied. If you have a good one, you need to think about how it can be translated into a visual compelling story, which also limits the options So, it can take some time to really find one which fits all requirements. Eventually it is important to have a good mix and a holistic concept when it comes to the music, the visual expression and the lyrical scheme which are represented by a band name. In our case, we found something we can identify with. It leaves room for interpretation, has a heavy but positive connotation at the same time.

You have 5 members in the band, can you tell us how they all came together:

Ronny (vocals) – Joined in 2017 and was recommended by our guitar player.

Dirk (lead & solo guitar) – Formed with me BADOC in 2004 actually.

Sebastian (rhythm guitar & backing vocals) – He joined BADOC quite early, I think 2005 or 2006

Tobias (bass) – Joined BADOC in 2006 or 2007

Thomas (drums) – Formed BADOC with Dirk

What made you pick metal/melodic/death over the other genres?

It simply the style of metal we like the most. We have a faible for remarkable songwriting, catchy riffs and melodies and driving rythms. It´s basically the quintessence of our musical socialisation. Many people say that genre is dead – might be. We are defintely not reinventing the wheel, but FROM ASHES REBORN is a good addition to all that hyper produced and super technical, Metalcore or Djent bands we see at the moment.

What kind of music do you enjoy listening to?

We actually have a very diversified mix of influences, ranging from old Dissection, In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Kataklysm, to more bands like Fleshgod Apocalypse or Der Weg einer Freiheit. But there also bands like Cannibal Corpse, Dimmu Borgir, Arch Enemy, Cradle of Filth, Trivium, Kreator or Dark Funeral that are influential for us in a way. We still have an ear on the underground and are permanently listening and digging for new stuff.

Who was the one person who inspired you to put a band together?

Hard to say. For Dirk and myself it was clear when we started to learn instruments at a young age, that we want to play in a band.

When did you know that this was something you wanted to do?

I think we were 12 or 13 years old when we started this. It took us then some time to develop from a cellar cover jam group to something I would call a band. It all got more exciting when our 2nd guitarist Sebastian joined, as he brought a totally new skillset and way of songwriting into the band.

Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years?

Definitely have released the next album! Having played some cool shows and enlarged our fanbase of course. But primarily, I hope we will be able to enjoy what we are doing in the same way. It´s hard to keep all people together when you are spread across the country, but it´s still something that plays an important role for us, so we make all efforts to keep it alive.

You have a new album that was released earlier this year called "Existence Exiled", why did you choose that name for the album?

It is basically the name of a song we have written earlier. We felt that it is a great name to be visualized in a stunning artwork – which it eventually did! Same as the band name, it leaves room for interpetation, it sounds unique . we were pretty clear that this is a cool title for our debut album.

What kind of reaction did you have from fans?

Very Good. Existence Exiled achieved very positive feedback not only in Germany, but also from US, Canada, Australia & Scandinavia, even Japan, both by press and fans. Also, our followers on social media channels and bandcamp are widely spread across the globe. It´s a great thing to see, that FROM ASHES REBORN is able to satisfy listeners to that style of metal globally.

Who writes the lyrics for your songs?

It has naturally evolved that I´m responsible for the lyrics. Typically I receive the ready made songs from the guitarists or at least fragments, and then I start writing.

Is there any inspiration for them, something that is happening within the band, or politics, some really like to get into their thoughts with songs.

There is no general lyrical concept. Generally, the lyrics are treating individual experiences, reflections on life and humanity and other thoughts, that are moving within in our minds. It´s a mix of melancholia but also a positive outlook on our ability to turn things into good. Like a “Black Clouds and Silver linings” theme so to speak.  We are avoiding topics that are very stereotype or cliché, as this would not fit to our individual personalities.

Did you do a tour in support of it?

There were no shows so far, but we are absolutely open to this. We plan some live activites for 2019.

What would you like to see happen next for you guys?

Progression. Development. Reach more fans with the album and just keep playing. We hope to be able to play some cool shows in some smaller venues in support of other great bands.

Is there anything you would like to add to this interview that you want people to know about you?

Thanks for giving us the opportunity for this interview! Thanks to everyone who bought our album so far or will buy in the future – your support is highly appreciated! There will be Merch (Hoodies, Zipper, Shirts) out soon, maybe you want to have one as well!

Thank you so much for taking the time to do this interview with us here at Metaltitans.
