AUGUST 28th 2014

Welcome to Metaltitans, Guardians of Metal entertainment worldwide. We are here with Jakob Batten guitarist of Illdisposed from Aarhus, Denmark. Thank you for taking the time to do this interview with us.

1. Can you explain how you came up with the name Illdisposed for you band, for those who don’t know.

Like many other band names, it’s taken out of some other band’s lyrics. In our case we stole the word from the lyrics for the Forbidden track “Tossed Away”.

2.  How is the metal genre in Denmark, is it well accepted there ?

Sure, metal is accepted. And compared to the size of the country, the scene is doing all right. The major problem here is, that is the same handful of bands getting all the attention as it was 10-15 years ago. We are one of these bands. But what will happen when we’re gone? We’ve been around for 23 years now, it won’t last forever.

3.  Tell us how each of the members came to be in the band -

Bo Summer - Subwoofer (aka. Vocals)
Bo formed the band back in 1991. He is the only original member left in the band.

Jakob Batten - Guitar
I joined the band in 1999. I was supporting Illdisposed on a tour with my former band Infernal Torment. Some time after that tour, Illdisposed called me and asked me to join the band as bass player. I was playing the bass for a couple of years until I took over the guitar.

Ken Holst - Guitar
Kind of the same story – Ken was in a support band, and we were tired of our 2nd guitarist at that time. So we asked Ken to step in – and kicked out Franz.

Kussen Jensen - Bass
Kussen was in the same band as Ken, so it was an easy solution to just ask him instead of having auditions and stuff when Jonas left.

Kim Jensen - Drums
Kim is our newest member. He joined last year – to begin with as a substitute for Thomas, who had surgery to his knee. A little later Thomas left for good and Kim joined in.

4.  Was there any inspiration, band or ?? that made you want to be in a band ?

I guess it all started when one of the older kids offered me an Iron Maiden tape. It was in 2nd primary, so I was eight years old or something. I was hooked. I had been playing the piano since I was able to walk, but suddenly I wanted an electric guitar.

5.  With The Lost Souls On Our Side, your 13th album, why that name for the album?

The title is also a song title off our first album “Four Depressive Seasons”. While writing the songs for the new album, we felt that we were striving for the good old days.

6.  Who wrote the lyrics for this ? Was there some inspiration that led to the writing ?

Bo wrote the lyrics. He’s writing all of our lyrics. I know that they are quite personal, and his way of letting off steam. He’s just dealing with all the crap in life, I guess. That’s why they’re so dark and negative.
7.  It was released June 27th, have you gotten any numbers yet on sales, or where it might be on charts ?

I was just told yesterday that it entered the official Danish album chart at #60. It’s the seventh album in a row that landed in the chart here in Denmark. That’s all I know for now. Our previous album was in the German chart as well.

8.  Among the 10 tracks (CD) , do you have a favourite, and if so, why that one ?

At the moment I really like the 2nd track, “The Way We Choose”. It’s pretty fast and brutal and kind of a contrast to the midtempo songs that we’re known for.

9.  Does the label decide on what to release it on, like CD Jewel Case, Limited Edition Digipack ?

That’s the label’s call. But I prefer Digipacks, the artwork looks better on these. And the jewel cases always break when shipping them.

10.  Tue Madsen (Suicide Silence/Heaven Shall Burn/Sick Of It All) produced and mixed your new album, why did you choose to go with Tue for this one ?

With Tue we don’t need to argue about this and that to get the sound we want. The first test mix he does is always extremely close to the final result. I think he understands us. And that saves a lot of time and unnecessary discussions.

11.  Album artwork was created by Lasse Hoile (Illdisposed/Porcupine Tree/Anathema/Opeth/Dream Theater), did you give the artist some ideas or did they come up with something on their own ?

He came up with everything himself. We only gave him the title and some songs to listen to. He’s got a very artistic approach to things, he isn’t just piling some skulls and adding some blood.

12. Do you plan on touring for this release ?  Is in in the works, or being planned as we speak ?

A European tour is being planned as we speak. It will be 2-3 weeks in November. That’s all I know so far.

13.  You will be releasing a video in September, why so long after your release of the album ?

We won’t be releasing a video this time – don’t know where you got that info J

14.  Do you make up your own guitar riffs ?

Yes, I’m writing most of our music. I prefer to focus on making a good song instead of just piling some riffs on top of each other. That’s my approach, I hear the complete song inside my head before I start working on it with my guitar.

15.  Did you take lessons as a child ?

Only piano lessons. After that I was playing the drums, and then I started playing guitar. I bought a Metallica “Kill ‘em all” tablature book and began learning the riffs.

16.  Can you play any other instruments as well ?

Yeah. I realized that I can play any instrument, I just need some time with it of course.

17.  What kind of music do you enjoy listening to when you are not working on Illdisposed ?

Anything from metal to pop and rock, as long as it’s good. Opeth, Mastodon, Tool, Morbid Angel, A-HA, Depeche Mode.

18.  What would surprise us most about yourself ?

I’ve been a fan of the Norwegian pop group A-HA since I was a kid. I guess that’s unusual for a death metal musician, but I don’t know… What’s surprising these days?

19.  Is there anything you would like to add that I might have missed asking, or you think people should know about Illdisposed ?

Somehow we haven’t been touring in the States yet. I hope we will get the chance to change that soon. Until then, check out our new album “With The Lost Souls On Our Side”. Cheers
Thank you so much Jakob, for taking the time to do this interview with us here at Metaltitans. We wish you much success with “With The Lost Souls On Our Side”.
