AUGUST 22nd, 2014

Welcome to Metaltitans, Guardians of Metal entertainment worldwide. We are here talking the band IODINE. Thank you for taking the time to do this interview with us.

1.  Your band is from Leiria, Portugal, was it easy to put together a band ?

Hey Rita and to the rest of the Metaltitans team, first of all let us thank you for the opportunity to share our work and let more people know about us. So, it was relatively easy to start Iodine back in the days. At the time there wasn’t as many bands as there are today in our city but we were lucky to find the right people for this journey.

2.  When did you decide to form IODINE ?

It happened when we were in high school, a lot of the guys were starting to play an instrument or already were into cover bands and we decided to form our own thing.

3.  How did you come to the decision to call your band IODINE, was there some previous ideas that you were thinking about ?

No, it was pretty much Iodine since the beginning. The founding guitar players had already picked a name from previous conversations.

4.  Did you have any bands or musicians that inspired you to want to put together a band ?

Well yeah, to most of us it was Deftones and System of a Down. We were really into these bands and after all this time we still are.

5.  Your style of music is hardcore / metal / alternative, what made you decide on these genres ?

Today our music can be labelled as many things but the reality is we create the music we like to hear. Our favorite bands fit in those genres but we’re into other styles also. We listen to a lot of orchestral music and electronic stuff too.

6.  You have 5 members in your band, can you tell us how each of them came to be in IODINE ?

Diogo, Gonçalo and Marco (former guitar player) are the founding members.  Fábio and Helder joined a few months later, we knew them from high school. When Marco left a couple of years ago we had to seek a new member and Rui was a fan of our music so we asked him to join.

7. Did any of the members take lessons while they were growing up, teaching them their instruments ?

Our drummer Gonçalo, had saxophone and percussion lessons. The rest of us are self-taught, we are always seeking to improve ourselves through other means.

8.  When you were in school, what was your favourite subject ?

Well, for Rui it was Music Initiation lessons, for Fábio Photography and Art lessons, for Diogo it was English and Portuguese lessons, for Gonçalo Math lessons and for Helder History lessons.

9.  How old were you when you realized that being in a band was something you wanted to do ?

We were between 17 and 20 years old.

10.  You now have a 3rd EP out called “Izabel” , how did you come up with the name for the EP ?

So, the name for the EP came from one of the characters in our story. The story revolves around her, she is the one to ignite a fire in other character’s lives, the need for a change, the will to fight back against the atrocities committed by the regime in Abyss City. Her name didn’t appear anywhere and we thought that it was important to have her front and center.

11. How many songs are on it ?

It consists in an intro, four songs, an interlude and an outro.

12. Who did the writing for this EP ?   Where did any inspiration come from for the writing of the songs ?

We worked like most of the bands do, the guitar players bring ideas, then all together we shaped it into songs. The lyrics are always the final stage of each song.  The inspiration for this EP came from the uninspired world around us, the shitty politics, the messed up principles inside everybody’s heads and the full-on war against nature that’s destroying our fucking planet.

13.  Who did the artwork for Izabel ?  And did you already have an idea of what you wanted it to look like ?

We previously decided that we wanted Izabel’s face on the cover and our good friends João Matos and Tiago Cardoso did their magic. We loved the final product.

14.  Do you have a favourite song on this EP ? Why that one ?

For some of us is Darker Days, Brighter Nights, others Metastasis. We think those are the ones that have the core message of the concept.

15.  Where do you see yourself as a band 5 years from now ?

Well, hopefully touring around Europe and with at least a couple of full albums out already. That would be great.

16.  Do you have a favourite band you like to listen to ?

Sure we do, there are some bands we’re all into… Architects, Cult of Luna, Northlane, and stuff like Poison the Well, Deftones and Post-Rockish bands always find their way into our music.

17.  Would you like to now go out on a tour to support this new EP ?  And where would you like to go ?

We’ve been touring around Portugal until some days ago and we’re trying to book some European shows.  Some places we would like to go are England, France, Spain, Germany and Holland… Who knows?

18.  Is there anything that you would like to add to this interview that I might have missed asking. Something you think the people should know.

Yes, thanks for this piece of conversation, we had a great time!  We’ll have some new stuff coming out soon so be sure to check our page once in a while at
