As most of you know, when I do a review for a show, I am also travelling with the owner of Metaltitans who also happens to be a photographer, and we were really looking forward to covering this show tonight at the Red Room in Vancouver. A great venue, with some pretty good sound. The lighting was not too bad either, especially with metal bands, who usually prefer the reds. So an hours ride into town was a must for this lineup.

There are two local bands hitting the stage first tonight opening for the tour package. They are OBSIDIAN and GROSS MISCONDUCT, both from Vancouver. Obsidian had a full on metal assault, truly a great set from this band. Also check out their new album “Into Oblivion” to be released Oct 11th.  Next up is Gross Misconduct, a little more along the lines of death, progressive and thrash, pretty good set from them as well. You should never miss out on the local bands, you just might miss a great band.

Okay, in all honesty here, this next band is the reason why I wanted to be here. CARACH ANGREN, a horror metal band that hail from the city of Limburg. They are also one of the most notable natives from the Netherlands. “This Is No Fairytale” is their latest album released through Season of Mist, now a fairy tale is usually a story involving fantastic forces about magical creatures such as wizards, goblins, a false story that is meant to trick people. Watching Carach Angren is like watching a story being told right in front of your eyes. With them being the magical creatures. They have such a theatrical presence on stage from start to finish, but I will tell you, you are getting so much more when they perform. Musically, everything is so well thought out, all the instruments complement each other, being masterfully done. I am still in awe as I watch this band, and I just saw them Sept 16 and 17. I don’t think I could ever become bored with them. At times, I am smiling from ear to ear, and other times, I get a little creeped out by masks and other such things. So much from a set. Sadly, before you know it, it’s over, and you just want to scream NOOOOOOoooo !! Believe it or not, they also have a wall of death, and everyone who wants to, partakes in it. This band has created such an image, such talent musically, that you will never walk away from their sets. I am pretty sure that if I was following them on this tour, I would be astounded each and every night. Check them out if you haven’t witnessed this phenomenon yet known as Carach Angren. Truly, can’t wait for their return. I will list the tour dates at the end of this review, so please go check the dates, and if you can, make sure you hit a city near you.

Now the headliner for this show is none other than Canada’s own KATAKLYSM, a melodic death metal hard hitter who are still on tour promoting their latest album “Of Ghosts and Gods”. You know, I have to say, it has been awhile since I have seen them play, and when I do it is usually the Rickshaw. But this was the best venue to hold and display the talent that is Kataklysm. Great sound, excellent lighting, making it a terrific experience. Yes, I couldn’t stand down in front, but I had a spot that was safe, from the moshers, and showed the excellent showcase of the talent behind this band as well. They played a variety of their songs, everyone was cheering, horns raised, and just thoroughly having a great time. Even the guys in the band looked to be enjoying themselves. I actually enjoyed their set, because the sound was so good here. They also always have the energy to showcase their talent, even with all the touring they do.

Well I am still living in last night zone. You really need to get out and see this tour when it comes through, it is absolutely amazing. So much to offer. More importantly, show some support, buy some merch, it makes for a great memory of the show.
