JULY 15th 2015

Welcome to Metaltitans, Guardians of Metal Entertainment Worldwide, we are here with Max Kolesne, drummer for Brazilian death metallers KRISIUN. Thank you for taking the time to do this interview.

1. The band formed back in 1990, so you have seen a lot of things over the years, what do  you think is the worst that has happened to the music industry ?

To me honestly, one of the worst things that has been happening in the Metal scene, is the abuse of technology for audio recording. With all these new tools and computer technology many bands and producers started to manipulate and fake 's musician performances. They look too much into perfection and forget the feeling and the vibe of the music, making it sound plastic, artificial and soulless...

2. Being around now for 25 years, you have come a long way since the beginning, are you happy with your success ?

Yes, we could not be happier. Krisiun has built a loyal strong following along the years, we are not mainstream, but our fan base is solid and real, we know we can count on them. And even better, we got their respect and support doing the music we love.

3. Is there anything that you have dreamt of doing in your career that you have not done yet ?

I don’t think so, actually we have gone further than what we had ever dreamed of...
When we started this band, my only dream was to play small clubs, underground shows...and maybe one day play outside Brazil...

4. You are about to release a new album “Forged In Fury” Aug 7 through Century Media, which marks your return after 3 years of continuous touring, are you excited about this release ?

Yes, we are absolutely excited about this release!

5. What can fans expect to hear on this album ?

"Forged in Fury" is without any doubt the most diverse album we've done, it has lots of dynamics and different rhythms, from slow heavy marching pace to super fast insane parts.

As the title says, this album was forged in fury,  attack and savage brutality.

6. The producer of the new album is well renowned Erik Rutan (Mana Recording Studios, FL), who also worked on your “Conquerors of Armageddon” in 1999. You have had albums in between, what made you go back to Erik for this album ?

The last three albums we did with the same producer, Andy Classen at Stage one studios in Germany, and he did an amazing job for the three albums. Even though, we were absolutely happy with his productions, we thought we should go for another producer for a change. One of the first names we had in mind was Erik Rutan. He is a good guy and has done some of the heaviest Death Metal productions out there. He also knows Krisiun very well and knows that a band like Krisiun has to sound natural, heavy, raw and clear at same time, just like the music.

7. There is a total of 10 songs to enjoy, do you have a favourite one ? If so, why that one.

Hard to pick one favourite...Souless Impaler, Oracle of the Ungod and Strength Forged Fury, are definitely some of my favourite ones...

8. Where does the inspiration come from to write songs ?

The inspiration is natural, we love to play fast, aggressive music...its something that its in our blood. We inspire each other, when I hear the other guys playing I got inspired, and it’s the same for them, its all about feeling and chemistry.

9. Was it a long process from the very beginning to the completed CD ?

Not really, it took a few months to write the whole material, and a month to record the album.

10. What would you say was the hardest part of the process ?

I think the whole process is  kind of hard. Even though it’s a lot of fun, you have to immerse yourself  in the creative process, and get focus 100%, and you can waste time fucking around, cause you have to get it done. The same when we started the recording process, you got to be prepared, focus,  well rehearsed and make sure the performances will be good.

11. The cover artwork was done by renowned artist Joe Petagno (Motorhead, Marduk, Vader and more), had he previously worked on any of your other albums ?

Yes, he already did  two covers for us, for the albums Conquerors of Armageddon and Ageless Venomous.

12. When he started work on the art, did you give him ideas to work with, or did he create the image on his own ?

He created the cover on his own, as he knows our music and the kind of subject we mostly use in our lyrics, he knew what to do. Sometimes is better to not tell the artist what you want, so he might come up with something absolutely crazy and original.

13. Explain what the image represents to you.

The beast, after all the wars, chaos, bloodshed and enemies he's defeated , remains strong and uncorrupted.

14. When you were younger, was this something that you and your brothers had always dreamed of doing ?

Definitely, we had this dream to make it happen, to make this band real and conqueror followers around the globe.

15. Was it hard to get recognized in Brazil at all with death metal ?

Not really, I mean, a Death Metal band will only be respected for real as a solid band after years proving itself worthy of respect. You can not conquer a real following from night to day, but proving album after album, show after show that you are not just one more band in the scene. Brazil has a big Metal scene, people love Metal here.

16. Century Media is putting this out, but do you have a say as to what kind of packaging it goes out as … like CD, or the red vinyl, do you get to pick the red ?

Usually the label comes up with the idea and asks what we think. Besides the red and regular black vinyl, there’s a golden version for Forged in Fury.

17. It will also be available as a digital download, I am curious, will that be a free download, or do you pay for it ?  I am asking because if it is free, doesn’t that hurt the money the band could make on an album ?

Normally people will have to pay to download the album on internet. I know many people will get it for free somehow on internet, but I know the real fans will buy it.

18. Today July 9, you released a brand new track, tell me, why does it go to Soundcloud now instead of right into “You-tube” ?

I guess that’s how Metal Hammer and Zero Tolerance could make it available in their sites since they premiered the song. But Scars of Hatred is on youtube as well.

19. There is no rest for the wicked I see, you have some intense touring coming up (check the bottom of this interview for dates), will you be playing some of the new songs on tour?

Oh yeah, definitely, at least three new songs.

20. Tell us what the best experience for you is, being a member of Krisiun ?

Being in this band for more than 20 years, playing the music I love to play, doing what I most like to do which is to play drums, have the freedom to develop my style and work with my brothers, I definitely have no complains.

21. What is the best part of being on such long tours ? Anything ;)

Playing shows everyday.

22. Can you tell us something about Krisiun, that we may not know already ?

Not sure what to say, I think most of people know pretty much everything about the band..

Would you like to add anything to this interview that I might have missed asking you, but you want people to know…..

Oh no, I think that’s it.

Muito obrigado (Thank you so much) for taking the time to do this interview with us here at Metaltitans, and we wish you much success with your new album “Forged in Fury”.  And we will be there to see you play in Vancouver, BC on Sept 9 at the Rickshaw Theatre.

Thanks to our friends at Metal Titans!
See us in Vancouver! Take care!

Max Kolesne
