MAY 16th 2015

Welcome to Metaltitans, Guardians of Metal Entertainment Worldwide, we are here with Alexander Ellström, from TRIAL, the newest metal sensation out of Sweden.
Thank you (Tack) for taking the time to do this interview with us.
1. Tell us how you came up with the name Trial ?

At first we chose the name TRIAL because of the Satan song "Trial by Fire". But nowadays it's not quite relevant anymore. The name have over time developed itself into a deeper meaning to us. TRIAL is a platform for our personal goals and trials in a sense.
2. You formed back in 2007, who originally formed the band?

TRIAL was formed by me (Alexander Ellström), Andreas Johnsson, Andréas Olsson and Martin Svensson. Linus joined our forces some 2 years later.
3. I have read that all band members were in different bands, so how did you each come to be in Trial ?

Me, A.O. and M.S. played in a Thrash Metal band just prior to TRIAL. But we felt that we needed progression and in order to attain that we had to disband and form what came to be Trial. I played with Andreas Johnsson before TRIAL as well so it wasn't really a process of finding band members. We all knew each other from before.
4. Were the other bands metal as well that you were in ?

Yes, we've been playing Black, Thrash and Death Metal since we were very young.
5. What kind of bands were your inspiration as you were growing up, and did they have any influence on your music that you play today ?

I would say Maiden and Mercyful Fate were big influences upon the bands inception and you can hear that especially in our early work. Nowadays I would say that we rather draw inspiration from Black and Death Metal than from Traditional Heavy Metal. We don't aim to be a band that resembles any other band. We strive to do our own thing and act thereafter. With that being said, it's difficult to escape your early influences because they were so important during your formative years. Although there's not only hard rock and metal that made TRIAL what we are today.
6. How about your parents, did they give you support ?  And do they still support you ?

Our families will always be important to us no matter what. But it all comes down to that, what we do; we do for ourselves and not for others whether it's our families or our friends.
7. Do they ever come out to a concert you are playing ?

Again, we play for our own sake and wouldn't need another distraction at our concerts. They show their support in other ways than to come to our shows.
8. You have your first album "Vessel" coming out January 23 via High Roller Records, are you excited about it ?

Yes, very much. We've had the opportunity to work with so many talented people so we think the album turned out splendid.
9. You have 7 songs on the album, do you personally have a favourite one ? If so, why that one ?

Not exactly. I like to listen and play the album as a whole because it's the dynamics that makes the album complete.
10. Who does the writing for your songs ?

Lyrically for the VESSEL release it was Martin, Andreas J and myself who contributed. Musically, it was me and A.J. who came up with the main ideas for the songs.
11. Is there some inspiration behind the song writing ?

Yes, there always is! I mostly draw inspiration from within myself, otherwise it wouldn't turn out in a way that is authentic.
12. Tell us why you chose to do metal, over any other genre ?

It's hard to tell really. We were very involved in all kinds of metal when we started out TRIAL. I think it's just an coincidence that we came to play heavy metal because we all listen to very different kinds of genres. Myself for example, can sometimes find it hard to get the right stimulation whilst listening to metal. So I have to sometimes turn my attention elsewhere.

13. Did everyone write their own music (drum blasts/guitar riffs) ?

Everyone in the band knows they are free to contribute in any form to the song writing process. Often when I bring an idea to the table, I have a very clear picture of how I would like it to sound and that often includes bass lines and drum parts aswell. So when I present my vision we take it from there to see if it's doable or not. Everyone is involed in one way or another.
14. Where did you record Vessel ?

We recorded VESSEL at Sonic Train Studios in Varberg by the hands of Andy La Rocque and Olof Berggren.
15. Was it an easy process to get all the recordings/mixings done ?  Did everyone know their part before heading into the studio ?

It's never an easy process and it was a very intense period in our lives. But in retrospect I would like to think it went quite painless after all.
16. Studio time is pretty expensive, did you have help with the costs for it ?

Yes, High Roller were the ones responsible for making this album happen and for that we are eternally grateful.

17. The artwork for Vessels is so unique, who was the artist ?
The artwork were made by the talented Costin Chioreanu at Twilight 13 Media.

18. Tell us the story behind the artwork ? What it means, what it might represent, the images.

We provided Costin with some unmixed tracks from the album as well as the lyrics and his interpretation blew our minds away. We didn't expect the cover to turn out the way it did but the minute I saw the sketch I knew it was the one! I feel that he understood our cause completely.
19. Is there anything you would like to add to this interview that I might have missed asking ?

Thank you for doing this interview. To new ends!

Thank you very much for taking the time to do this interview with us here at Metaltitans, and we wish you much success with your album VESSEL.
