This is my first Ultimate “Namm” Jam experience, I was in town for my first Namm, and thought this event would be a great one to check out. If you visited participating sponsors (RCF, Dean Guitars, D Drum, Ampeg, Gear Secure, Cleartone, Wedgie) at NAMM you got free tickets.  This event was so full, the Hilton had to shut down its entrance doors, I guess they handed out too many tickets, as some were turned away at the door.

Starting off the night is a red-carpet event, with artists being interviewed by various people. The lighting was exceptionally bright, making for lots of shadows on the background. Cool to listen and hear what they had to say when asked questions.

The house band started the night off, consisting of Ultimate Jam Night mastermind Chuck Wright (Quiet Riot) on bass, drummer Chris Ralles (Pat Benatar) on drums and Mitch Perry (Edgar Winter, The Sweet) on guitar and multi-instrumentalist Walter Ino (Survivor) playing Queens (Tie you Mother Down), Led Zeppelins (Ramble On). Got your interest, well it sure did me. My kind of music, and live. I had a blast singing along, good thing it was loud enough no one could hear my off-key singing.

Now in all fairness, I didn’t know what to expect when I saw (Headcats) Danny B. Harvey, (I am Morbid) singer David Vincent, and Clemm Burke (Blondie) hit the stage to pay tribute to Motorhead Lemmy Kilmister. I never expected to be so enthralled with Vincents vocals, there are non-like it, really extra-ordinary and captivating, to be truthful here, I don’t think I even remember the songs, I was just so interested in hearing David sing. Excellent performance.

I am told you can never be prepared for what might happen at the Ultimate “Namm” Jam Night, and they are right, George Lynch joined Don Dokken, Ira Black (who just might be known for that hair), Marten Andersson (bass player extraordinaire) and Phil Varone (drummer for Jake E Lee’s Red Dragon, On air radio personality) for a couple of classic Dokken songs. A lot of surprised faces when these guys all got together, most never thought they would get to see Dokken and Lynch play together again.

For me another spectacular performance of the night was by Ray Luzier (Korn) on drums, Billy Sheehan (Winery Dogs) on bass, Alex Skolnick, phenomenal shredder (Testament) on guitar and Paulie Z (The Sweet) doing vocal duties.  Phil X, guitarist/vocalist (Bon Jovi, Phil X & the Drills) showed off his amazing skills on Montrose's Rock Candy with Bulletboys Marq Torien on vocals. Phil Chen and Ultimate Jam regular (Soul/Rock singer songwriter) Debbie Holiday on vocals did their cover of Faces “Stay with Me”. Richie Kotzen (The Winery Dogs, Mr. Big, Poison) is a phenomenal guitarist, singer, songwriter and producer. Together with band mates rocked the venue.

I am not sure I covered everyone, or the songs played, but when the musicians and the songs kick ass big time, it is hard to remember I am supposed to be reviewing this event.

Sadly, there were a couple of things that kind of threw me off, I am not going to mention names of the musicians, but tempers belong off stage, (guitar thrown), and another artist was told to leave the stage because of being intoxicated (leave the drinking until after your performance). I was surprised because these guys are long time musicians. I would liked to have seen a photo pit up front for the photographers, some had a hard time maneuvering around pushy fans, and maybe a couple of seats around the outside just for the folks that are older but loved that sound of rock and roll.
