“What is Asomvel?”, - “Well, this is a young Lemmy”. That was the conversation I had right before Asomvel entered the stage, and the judgement is very accurate.
Asomvel have three Marshall fullstacks each side of the kit. This is the biggest stage setting for an opening band I have ever seen.
What to begin with? First of all, whoa, such a drive! Yes, the band definitely has Lemmy vibes, but as a unit they also have better sound, performance and, well, literally everything.
Asomvel could easily headline and fit any place. Exceptionally good sound and very cool smoked vocals, charismatic stage presence. Last but not least, not boring - the songs are actually different! And yes, you heard it right, sorry, not sorry - they are just better than Motorhead; also yes, I have seen Motorhead, so I can testify.
This set is over and it is the band themselves that loads all the real amps, cabinets and other gear. They pass me and I see huge dents on the china cymbal - like it was a bulldozer that drove over it. Yeah, not surprised.
I would go to a gig when I see this name on the announcement.
As a headliner, Airbourne need to have more (of everything), so they get four Marshall full stacks right and left to the drum kit. Well, one stack is Wizard amps, but you get the idea.
Damn loud and they start with the Terminator 2 theme intro.
As a proper rock gig, we all know that the beer cans must by flying over, and it is Joel O'Keeffe, the frontman, that throws the first beer in the audience from the stage.
The bass is not just loud, it is the loudest I have ever heard. Everything is vibrating! Very beautiful lights, lights and for once a rock band uses a real smoke machine! It looks very retro around the drums - ward lights and the fog, running musicians and very personal interaction with us. Joel plays Sweet Home Alabama while tuning his guitar (not with a tuner, but hitting strings and tuning them right into the loud PA - and it is also entertaining and alive).
On Raise the Flag Joel goes into the crowd to crack his beer - after he throws several glasses of beer into the audience once again. It is a fun show - huge place, but it feels the place is tiny - a crowdsurfer gets a guitar pick.
A new song, Alive After Death, and the bass is even louder - I assume, the live mix is very dynamic mixing.
I have not had a chance to see AC/DC live, but I am happy that I had a chance to see their “younger brother” Airbourne - they are a must see act and I strongly recommend to catch this combo with Asomvel this tour!
