Mark Tremonti is an interesting persona. He has definitely made splashes in the contemporary rock scene. From stadium rock giants Creed to Alter Bridge and his own solo project Tremonti that have just recently played in a club with capacity of 500, demonstrating his diversity in the solo work where Mark “Sings Frank Sinatra” (and it is brilliant). Signature PRS guitar and signature PRS amp (with a roar you cannot confuse with any other amp), - I feel that his initiatives definitely deserve to be higher on the radar.
After that kinda small Tremonti gig (I cannot understand the tastes of our public), today we have Alter Bridge that rock a 1700+ capacity Sentrum Scene in Oslo. This time there are also bands I would really like to see that are opening, - namely Sevendust and Daughtry.
A lot of people in the audience are in white T-shirts, which is not typical for your average rock show, but this is because the Alter Bridge’s last and self-titled album is white and people are flashing their merch. This gig is the first of two days they play in Oslo, and their European tour supporting the album lasts until March (well, the very last dates are actually UK, but let’s use the old terms, - the referendum to leave was just ten years ago - nothing compared to age of our universe).
Sevendust are the first time in Norway, which is interesting, since I have known them since very long ago. Norway apparently is not a comfortable place for acts in the Nu and Alternative - rock genres, luckily, this day has come.
Some frontmen are making you feel at home even when they are visiting. Lajon Witherspoon is that guy. Such a gentleman. The vocals are exceptionally good and sit very firmly in the mix, but who actually steals the show is the drummer, Morgan Rose. This is how you look like when you really enjoy the show. From throwing sticks in the audience mid-song to simply eradicating the kit while delivering backing vocals, Morgan is absolutely on fire - you need to see it (and he also was a fill-in drummer for Korn, Mötley Crüe and more). Being back everyone yet being the centre of it.
I enjoy it much more than on the recordings, great sound and enormously big bass, - not always the band that opens has such a good sound.
Daughtry have a dangerous slot to play. The vocals are very thin, but this is by design - this is how modern cheesy rock used to sound.
Marty O’Brien flashes his collection of bass guitars with enormously cool finishes. It is just strange that the models are not deluxe, but these basses look beautiful.
Daughtry have only one guitar and the solos are very prominent and nice. I also like how the drummer has cool electronic pads on the side and plays them instead of just pressing play for a more electronic drum sound.
It is better lights and Daughtry made it quite diverse with acoustic songs, but such cheesy rock is just not my thing, - the set feels eternally long filled with unneeded motivational speeches.
Alter Bridge have a backdrop that is so big they need to hold one part to be able to enter the stage. And it sounds damn heavy!! Silent Divide, the first song from the new album, is a perfect choice for an opener, I am glad. It is heavier than the average alt rock, and yet so natural. And it is human.
Marc kills it with solos, which is also expected. Myles Kennedy humbly addresses the audience and he sounds a bit too shy for a band that has not one, but two dates in Oslo.
Myles is a very good guitar player as well, and he looks very comfortable with his axe as well.
Mark sings on Burn it Down, there are acoustic songs as well, and any of the 17 songs they play could be put on a radio (only if they did not suck).
This is when the setlist is long, but does not feel long. The vocals get lost in the mix sometimes, the solos are a bit too sharp, no clicks, no backtrack, nothing to make it look and feel more than it is. It is there, it is great and it is real.
Alter Bridge’s every song has a hook, and it is a good time to see them, since the last album is a monster!
