MT: Before 2020 when you started up your project, what did you do before that ?
I played in many bands as a drummer (Rock, punk, heavy), I released 4 albums with the band Fiinky Pie as a bass player/ singer, traditional hard rock, we toured a lot in the 2000s. I also played in Black Blade, a Heavy/Black project that released a demo.
MT: What made you decide to become your own vocalist and do all the instruments yourself ?
For this Deep Space Mask project, I had a very precise idea of what I wanted to record, unfortunately in France few musicians are interested in this Heavy/Doom style, and as I have my own home studio and I play a bit of everything, I started working alone and I really liked it so I continued to have fun alone.
MT: How did you come up with the name "Deep Space Mask" ?
I'm a big fan of science fiction, it came to me like that while watching a Star Trek movie 😄, I had fun playing with this mask and my face that we don't see.
MT: So if you do all the vocals and instruments, does that mean you write all your own lyrics as well ?
Yes absolutely, but this is not the most interesting and fun part for me, I am not a great poet...
MT: If you write them, when does the inspiration come from ?
The lyrics talk about a bit of everything, rock'n'roll lifestyle, everyday life problems, complicated relationships, schizophrenia, serial killers, nothing specific but nothing very serious in any case.
MT: do you have a favourite song on the album, and why that one ?
I like them all, it depends on the day, sometimes I really like Teenage Dream and The King when I'm really speedy, and other times I'm more in a doom mood and then Voices and like a hurricane become my favorites. But if I have to keep just one, it's Teenage Dream, it's powerful, it contains different parts, the chorus is quite catchy.
MT: What is behind the album cover ?
It's just a rock'n'roll cover, quite dark and gloomy but not unhealthy, the fire, the guitar, skulls , it seems perfect to me for the Dark Heavy Rock style.
MT: How did you come up with the title for the album "Burn In Hell" ?
This is the title of the first song. The album was originally supposed to be called "Deep Space Mask III", but Andreas from Metalloscope-Music suggested I use it as the album title, as it fits the cover better.
MT: Did it take long from writing the lyrics to having the album finished ?
I always start by writing the riffs and the structure of the song before I start writing the lyrics. Very often I am faster at composing music than writing lyrics, as I said above, I am more comfortable with a guitar or a pair of drum sticks than with a pen 😄
MT: Tell us about your new album, and what people can expect from it .
So this is already the third album, I wanted to return to a more direct, punchier and faster music than on the previous albums. The production is raw, without frills, straight to the point, in your face ! I think the album is varied, some fast tempos, others much slower and heavier, others mid tempo. The melodies are catchy but powerful. I hope people will like it because I put all my heart into it. 8 compositions and a cover of Manilla Road to finish the album.
MT: Now that it is being released, is there anything you wished you had changed on it ?
There are always things we would like to improve but we have to know when to stop, otherwise in two years the album still won't be out...
MT: I guess you can't really tour if it is a one man band, or can you ?
Deep Space Mask is a studio-only project; there will never be any live performances. I've done a lot of concerts in my life, but now what I enjoy is recording again and again.
MT: When you listen to music what is your choice ?
A lot of different things. Of course I still listen to my old metal heroes (Sabbath, Priest, Alice Cooper, Kiss, AC/DC, Accept, Van Halen, BÖC, Led Zeppelin, Motörhead, Slayer, Venom, Mercyful Fate, Sodom, Trouble...), some Classic Rock (Bowie, Pink Floyd, The Beatles etc...), but I also listen to a lot of old Prog Rock (Yes, old Genesis, Magma), Jazz (Coltrane, Miles Davis), and a lot of Southern Rock.
MT: Now that the album is released, what are your plans ?
I'm going to start composing for the fourth album, I already have quite a few riffs that I'm certainly going to demo this summer, I'm far from having finished with Deep Space Mask !!! I just changed a lot of my guitar gear, it should sound different, especially with this new Peavey 5150 amp head I just got, once I get it down to size it should be awesome !!!
MT: Is there anything you would like to add to this interview that I may have missed asking ?
It was perfect, thank you very much for your interest in my project. I just want to say that working with Andreas from Metalloscope-music and Markus from Metal Message is a real pleasure, these people do a lot for bands like mine and it's remarkable.
Thank you for taking the time to do this interview with us here at Metaltitans, and we wish you much success.
