This will be a very goth / doom evening. I have already seen Paradise Lost, but it was 18 years ago in a galaxy far away and in Paris. Since then, the band has not been still, and the latest release Ascension being the strongest from this period to me.
I have never heard about the openers Cwfen and I am in love from the very first notes. It is as goth as it may get. There is a very cool effect on the Agnes Alder’s vocals, I like the drive coming from the drums. Guy deNuit is charismatic (also plays a very cool guitar with an aluminium neck). It is a great discovery for me personally and I highly recommend checking this live act!
Saturnus is not new to me, but I have never seen them live. It is a quality act, they have exceptionally good sound, but what I would emphasize the most is THIS growl!! It is extremely low and rich. Thomas on vocals casts some spells and also tries to speak danish, which is partly successful, since some share of the audience laughs.
Saturnus have a very powerful lineup and headbanging is hard. Beautiful solos, a synth pad snare in addition to the acoustic drum kit for some songs (why don’t more bands do the same?). A real doom presence, on the edge of funeral doom for some parts. If I got it correctly, Indee Rehal-Sagoo (guitar) has a tiny kid with him on tour, and he was coming back to the bus with a stroller. This must not be the easiest tour, wish you stamina, man!
What I like in Paradise Lost is that they may choose which style they want to tour with - literally. It can be light goth or very heavy doom. This time Paradise Lost have a bigger stage than 18 years ago. The drums are closed by plexi glass.
Serpent On The Cross is an opener with growls, so this will be a heavier gig. Ascension is a return to their heavier sound, and three songs of the set list are from this most recent release.
The band has grown, but the vocals, as years ago, have their limits. I generally like the tone of NIck Holmes’s voice, but on recordings. Live it is better than before, but still feels challenging. I hope that Greg (Mackintosh) is doing good - he looks like a character from Dürer's engravings - very thin.
I sense some Hetfield vibes where vocals are clean, - something I have not noticed before. One Second and Say Just Words are there, but just think of it - songs from 13 albums (!!!) are played to us, - Paradise Lost deliver a very good setlist, if only the vocals were not tired, - it would have been a pure perfection.
