SCRAPER EXCLUSIVE

Our very own, Metal Mom Rita, had the opportunity to talk to Simon from the thrash metal band, SCRAPER. Forming in 2016, these five guys joined forces merging their musical interests, to create their own metal project. Back in 2020, with their first release of "Hunger Within", had a more obvious thrash metal sound, but with their newest works still in the process, they feel they are taking a little more from the global sense of genres, and the wide range around the music of metal.

Check out our exclusive below:

MT: How did you come up with the name of the band ?

We all were born in a small city, well known for its coal-mining industry. A Scraper is a machine and part of this process.

MT: The band has been around since 2016, how did it come to be ?

Our former drummer Daniel and Tobias decided to make some music after their old bands died. They were looking for some other musicians so Markus joined. Few weeks later they asked Simon for playing bass. He knew a singer and Carsten joined.

Later Daniel left the band followed by Markus for private reasons. We are still friends and see each other frequently. Simon knew some guys more and Ralf and Sebastian joined.

MT: Your band consists of :

Carsten David • Vocals
Tobias Wimmer • Guitar
Sebastian Lück • Guitar
Simon Royal • Bass
Ralf Schönberg • Drums

MT: The bands genre is Progressive Metal, Thrash and Death Metal, did you have some that influenced you to play this ?

These are the genres we enjoy the most. It wasn’t intentional to make this kind of music it grew by incindent depending on our favorite genres

MT: Who was your influence as you were growing up ?

If you were born in the ruhr area like us, there’s no chance to avoid the influence of legends like Kreator and Sodom. And if you were born as early as we were then add some Voivod and Destruction…

MT: Who is the person or persons who writes the lyrics, and where do the ideas come from ?

That’s me, Simon. I am a big sci-fi fan and very amazed and interested in every new technology. Although I really love Star Trek and its utopian environment, I think the future will be darker and more dystopian as long as we dont understand what‘s really important for humanity. And it’s not about the money, likes, clicks or followers.

MT: Does everyone do their own music, drummer does his, the bass creates his sound, guitarist his own riffs and such ?

Usually, yes, we wrote songs this way but "Infinte Journey" is very different. I had the idea for a concept album and for almost every riff. To say it more figurative, i came up with a bag of bones and described what the beast will be looking like and then we started to form a body. We put flesh and muscles on it. Finally we put some fur or scales or whatever on it and "Infinite Journey" came to life.

MT: You released a new album May 8 of this year "Infinite Journey"

Yes, and it sells very well! We had a ton of really good reviews and it keeps going! You need to listen to "Infinite Journey" more than once. This albums needs to grow on you and it will.

MT: Do you remember your first concert ? How was it ?

Sure I remember, but instead oft the first concert I tell you what was more important for us. Our first concert in our current line-up. This show was a blast and legendary, because we openend a festival with legendary Paradise Lost headlining!

MT: Do you have any shows planned for the rest of the year ?

Actually we have 5 or 6 more gigs. Two shows will be really great because we will be the openening act for VOIVOD! How cool is this?! This is truely a dream for us!

MT: Do you have a favourite band ? Have you seen them in concert ?

I can only speak for myself, but my fave is and will always be VOIVOD. I saw them last weekend on the Pitfest in Netherland (great venue!) and I will see them again on 23rd July in Turock, Essen (Germany), when we open the stage for them :D

MT: Is there a band you listen to that people would be surprised by ?

Lots. We listen to Jazz and classical music :D

MT: Is there anything you would like to add that I might have missed.

Thanks to all who already listend to our release. We really appreciate this!

Thank you for taking the time to do this interview with us here at MetalTitans, it is greatly appreciated.

We thank you, too!
